Program at a Glance

Design a degree tailored to your interests and preferred learning style. Choose two certificates from those offered by either TCNJ or the Regional Training Center and add a capstone to create a specialized master’s degree. This 30+ credit program addresses the teacher shortages in bilingual education, ESL, special education, and science and acknowledges the changing nature of school leadership by including three leadership certificates targeted to teachers.

Who Should Pursue This Program?

The program is ideal if you’re a certified, practicing teacher who wants to earn a master’s degree while increasing your mentorship, development, and leadership skills. It’s especially fitting if you have already completed a TCNJ educational certificate and intend to stay in the classroom or if you plan to pursue the supervisor certificate to ultimately become a supervisor or department head.

Careers

Most of our students and graduates come from area school districts, including West Windsor-Plainsboro, Hamilton, Trenton, Ewing, and Hopewell Valley. Teachers with this degree move into different areas of certification, become better prepared to teach English language learners or students with disabilities, and gain leadership skills.

Engaged Faculty

This program draws from multiple departments across TCNJ’s School of Education. You’ll learn from diverse, experienced faculty who will work closely with you on your capstone, which involves designing an action research project you’ll conduct at your school. You’ll also hear from alumni who serve as featured speakers and instructors.

Extensive Network

Study alongside peers with solid education experience, learn from faculty who have valuable contacts in their field, and benefit from an alumni community with strong professional connections.

For your application to be considered complete, you must submit the online application and all supplemental documents.

National Standardized Admission Test Requirement and Waivers:  Applicants to the Master of Arts in Education Studies program are required to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Records Examination (GRE). The tests must have been taken within the last five years. [Target range GMAT 540+ or GRE 310+] We waive the standardized testing requirements (GMAT/GRE) when the applicant meets one of the following criteria:

  • already has an earned graduate-level degree (master’s or another higher-level degree);
  • earned a bachelor’s degree from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA;
  • earned a bachelor’s degree from another regionally accredited college/university with at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA;
  • earned at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA (with no grades lower than B) at TCNJ through two graduate courses in non-matriculated status or a certification program. The most recent academic experience at TCNJ will prevail.
